Do You Have a Leak in Your Pool?

If you're noticing water loss in your pool and wondering whether it's due to a leak or just evaporation, the bucket test is an easy and effective way to find out—no professional help is needed!

How to Perform the Bucket Test

1. Fill Your Pool

Start by ensuring your pool is filled to its standard level.

2. Prepare the Bucket

Grab a 5-gallon bucket and fill it with pool water, leaving about 1 inch from the top.

3. Turn Off Autofill

If your pool has an autofill device, make sure to turn it off. For commercial pools, also turn off any autofill valves and close access to the pool.

4. Place the Bucket

Immerse the bucket into the pool about 5 inches deep. Placing it on the first or second step of your pool works perfectly.

5. Mark the Water Level

Use a marker or tape to note the water level inside the bucket and the water level outside the bucket.

6. Wait 24 Hours

Leave the bucket in place and return after 24 hours to compare the water levels.

7. Check the Results

If the water level outside the bucket has dropped more than the water level inside, your pool likely has a leak and you should contact a professional (that's us).

Tips for Accurate Results

-Time it Right: Make sure to check the bucket exactly at the 24-hour mark. Waiting longer can lead to inaccurate results.

-Weather Conditions: If it rains during the test, you'll need to start over when the forecast is clear.

After completing the test, you can use a pool water loss calculator to estimate how much water is being lost due to the leak. This simple test can save you time and money by helping you identify leaks early on.
